It’s A Japanese Jungle Out There Where Do I Start?
If you have made the wise choice and decided to learn Japanese online you may now be faced with the decision of what Japanese language course to buy.
To make your decision a little easier I am going to outline what you should be looking for in a online Japanese course.
The first thing is to make sure that course you are looking at is actually a true online course because on the Internet they tend to be advertised along with courses that are actually physical products or CD’s and books. Don’t forget one of the biggest draw cards of learning online is the lower prices so don’t be fooled be courses that try and charge $500 and say it is because they are better. This is not neccesarily true, it is often because they need to cover their product and shipping fees.
Next on the agenda is select a course that has a variety of teaching methods and doesn’t just give you a whole lot of text to read on your computer screen, otherwise you are just buying a glorified E-book. The better courses have audio clips and images and even games to help you learn and enjoy it at the same time. The creator of Rocket Japanese ‘Sayaka Matsuura’ has done this very well in her course. If you want to know more about this author you will find it here: Sayaka Matsuura review.
What I have found is that the courses that have the best balance between teaching grammar and learning vocabulary in the most interactive way tend to do the best. Some of the older generation courses such as Pimsleur are starting to lose their popularity now that courses like Rocket Japanese and Nihongo Japanese have come along.
Also you need to consider what your motivation for learning Japanese is, because if you require reading and writing ability in Japanese you need to consider carefully what online course you select. Most courses will touch on the one of the Japanese writing scripts but very few go into detail on them, however most people are looking to start speaking confidently first anyway.
If you are selecting a course for kids to learn Japanese, then I recommend that you pick a course that uses images and audio very well and even has a games to help keep kids intertested.
Earlier I discussed the course Pimlseur which is older and more well known but not the best these days in my opinion, and there is also Instant Immersion Japanese which is newer, but both courses are not in the same league as Rocket Japanese which is the best value out there.
