Another simple method, yet  involving a little more effort, is to carry 3-by-5 cards with you and jot down new words whenever you encounter them in your everyday life.  As the day comes to its end, you can sit down and detemine which words and terms are the most useful to add to your permanent vocabulary.  Then you can create flash cards using these terms and note the English translation on the flip side of the cards.
